We almost always have snow, but only on our wonderful trails. Kötschach-Mauthen and the Upper Gailtal offer their guests an extensive network of cross-country trails, which has also been awarded the seal of quality for its quality.

You draw your circles on double-track trails with a classic track and a skating track. Along the trails in the valley you will find a wide variety of ways to warm up. Mulled wine, mulled cider, a glass of wine and the obligatory "Brettljause" are of course included.

As trend sports, snowshoeing and ski touring have become a permanent fixture in the domestic winter offer in recent years.

Together with families and friends, you can hike the landscapes around Kötschach-Mauthen, completely off the beaten track. With good equipment and the right "snack", you can go through snow-covered meadows, ice-covered woods and possibly in bright sunshine to one of the surrounding peaks.

In bright sunshine, you can walk through forests, across meadows, past traditional farms and you will always find opportunities to rest. There is more than enough to discover on the different lengths and steep paths through our forests.
Hiking tip - Ödenhütte: From the village it is a leisurely 1.5 hours uphill walk. The Ödenhütte is a popular excursion point for both skiers and hikers with a view of the entire Gail Valley and the Carnic Alps. An overview map of the winter hiking trails around Kötschach-Mauthen is of course available in our reception. For toboggan fans there is also an illuminated night toboggan run on the Gailberg.

ÖAV Ice Center

At the entrance to the Mauthner Gorge, where a ray of sunshine rarely gets there in high winter, the 28 m high ice tower in the OeAV - leisure park is an alternative to the natural waterfalls / ice falls.

From the end of November to March, the “Alpine Torture Stake” can be climbed day and night with “top rope protection”. After the icy pleasure, the hut next to it offers plenty of opportunities to warm up and the ice-skating enthusiast can look forward to a few rounds on the artificial ice rink or a hearty curling tournament.
